Character Lore
Astraea was found as a child sleeping beneath the Sky Reach observatory, with no memory of where she came from — only a faint constellation mark burned into her palm. The Starlight Veil, a monastic order of scholar-mages, took her in and raised her among the old star-charts. By sixteen she had surpassed every elder in reading celestial patterns. She now serves as a field warden, venturing beyond the temple walls to investigate disturbances in the night sky — anomalies that the order believes are signs of something ancient stirring. Quiet and methodical, she speaks rarely. But when she does, the stars seem to listen.
About This Project
Astraea was created as a commission for an indie visual novel set in a celestial fantasy world. The brief called for a character that felt ancient yet approachable — someone whose power reads through stillness rather than action. The main challenge was balancing the angelic visual language (wings, light, robes) with a grounded, melancholic personality; early sketches leaned too heavenly, so the final design pulls the palette toward cool, desaturated purples and adds asymmetric details to break the symmetry typical of divine archetypes. The full design was created in Procreate, with final touch-ups and the colour exploration variants done in Photoshop. Turnaround time for this commission was 18 days including two rounds of revision. The client requested a complete character sheet with front view, expression pack, and two colour variants — all delivered as layered PSD files.
